Art of Bronze was honored to work with the California Department of Transportation, Hat Creek Construction, and Modoc County to create two life-size Mule Deer bronze monuments welcoming travelers into this beautiful region of Northern California.
The project began with the development of a preliminary clay model, allowing the project team to review the overall composition, proportions, anatomical details, and structural requirements before work began on the full-size sculpture. Once the design was approved, Art of Bronze began sculpting the original life-size clay mule deer.
Accuracy was especially important for this project. Considerable attention was devoted to capturing the characteristics that make the mule deer immediately distinguishable from other deer species. The sculpture features the animal’s large ears, distinctive forked antlers, narrow tail, scent glands, muscular body, and natural proportions. The buck was given an alert, commanding stance appropriate for a monument representing the wildlife and rugged landscape of Modoc County.
The sculpture was also engineered for permanent outdoor installation and incorporated a secure base designed to properly support and anchor the finished bronze monument.
Following approval of the completed clay sculpture, Art of Bronze moved into the mold-making process. From these molds, the sculpture progressed through the traditional bronze casting process, where individual bronze sections were cast, assembled, welded, chased, and finished before receiving their final patina.
Two complete bronze castings were produced from the original sculpture. One was installed to welcome travelers entering Modoc County from Oregon, while the second greets visitors arriving from Nevada.
The finished mule deer sculptures were prominently installed atop impressive rock monument signs bearing the words “Welcome to Modoc County.” The combination of monumental stonework and life-size bronze wildlife creates a memorable gateway that reflects the natural character of the region and provides visitors with an unmistakable sense of arrival.
For Art of Bronze, this project represents much more than creating two bronze deer. It demonstrates how custom bronze sculpture can be used to celebrate a community’s identity, wildlife, and surroundings while creating a landmark designed to welcome visitors for generations.
