The “Lady Justice” is the name of the Roman goddess of Law. Lady Justice is a personification of the judicial system and the so-called moral face. The most famous of all the sculptures was designed by Nicolas Mayer, a French artist 1852-1929. In his bronze version the goddess has her eyes covered with a blindfold. The blindfold represents the impartiality and objectivity of the law and that it doesn’t let outside factors, such as politics, wealth or fame influence its decisions. The goddess is holding a sword in her right arm. The sword symbolizes enforcement and respect. Justice stands by its decision and its ruling is able to take action. The sword is unsheathed and a sign that justice is transparent. Its double-edged blade signifies justice is bound to enforce the ruling as well as protect and defend the innocent party. The scales represent impartiality and the obligation of the law to weigh the evidence presented to the court.
