Chief Joseph (1840-1904) was a leader of the Nez Perce, A Native American tribe of the interior Pacific Northwest region of the United States.  He led his band of Nez Perce during the forcible removal of his people by the United States federal government from their ancestral lands in the Wallowa Valley in northeastern Oregon.  Chief Joseph led his people over 1,170 miles in hopes of seeking refuge in Canada.  Unable to fight any longer and just 40 miles short of the Canadian border, Chief Joseph surrendered to the Army.  He was transported between various reservations before finally being moved to Colville Indian Reservation in the state of Washington where he died.
