This wonderful cupid sculpture was acquired during the owners various travels throughout the world. It is a “French Bronze” which is actually spelter- an alloy with more zinc that has virtually all the properties of bronze. The sculpture is a French neoclassical style of mythological god Cupid after Auguste Moreau (French, 1834-1917. This after study was made in the late 20th century. Cupid is the Roman god of love, known for having a bow from which he shoots arrows. Cupid’s arrows have the power to make people fall in love — a task asked of him multiple times by the other gods. Two of the most famous stories about him concern Psyche and Apollo. However, he also uses his magic arrows on others, including Medea.
Auguste Moreau was the son of famous sculptor Jean-Baptiste Moreau, who acted as his first teacher. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and exhibited for the first time in 1861, reaching great success at an early age. The bulk of his sculptures were derived from allegorical or romantic figures and consisted of maidens, Pan, cherubs, or cupids. He was a member of the Salon des Artistes in France for around 50 years.
