Bronze craftsmanship shines through in this scaled up version, expertly capturing the gravity-defying scene of Cupid and Psyche’s union. Cupid’s pointed wings, upward gaze, flowing drapery, and dynamic pose convey a sense of ethereal grace and passion, while Psyche’s delicate form is transported into higher spheres with exquisite finesse.
Godet’s bronze sculpture rendition was inspired by William Adolphe Bouguereau’s renowned painting “The Abduction of Psyche,” takes us deep into the romantic saga of Cupid and the captivating princess Psyche—a beloved theme among 19th-century artists. The intricate detail and emotive storytelling of this piece pay homage to the mythological tale as recounted by the Roman writer Apuleius in “The Golden Ass” (or “Metamorphoses”), and later immortalized by Jean La Fontaine in “The Loves of Psyche and Cupid.”
